Authorities have confirmed that at least one person has been killed so far.
The landslide occurred in the Hapakanta area of Kachin State in Myanmar around 4 am local time on Wednesday.
Many people were trapped under the ground. Efforts to rescue them have continued. Most of the victims of the landslide are believed to be illegal gem seekers.
Myanmar, one of the world’s largest gem-rich countries, is prone to major accidents. The soil and stones extracted from these open mines are taken by truck and piled up in the vicinity. It is believed that the landslide was caused by the collapse of such a pile of waste.
